man looking at teeth in mirrorIt’s not uncommon for people to notice gum irritation when they brush their teeth. While they aren’t alone, it can be a sign of a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible.

Irritated gums may be a sign of gingivitis, a gum disease which, if left untreated, can cause problems in the mouth, pain, and be costly.

What Causes Gum Irritation?

Infection, injury, or inflammation is the usual causes of gum trouble. If people don’t brush or floss properly, a thin layer of plaque can form at the gum line. Gingivitis, or swelling of the gums, can quickly set in.

How to Prevent Gingivitis

There are lots of ways to protect gums from disease. Here are some to consider:

  • Brush teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss after each meal; change the toothbrush frequently.
  • Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol as this can aggravate the situation.
  • Maintain a healthy diet; avoid carbohydrates and sugary snacks that invite plaque buildup on teeth and gums.
  • Take necessary vitamin supplements; patients can ask their doctor about any prescription side effects that may affect their gums.
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco; obviously these can’t possibly help the situation.
  • Come in for regular exams with the dentist.
